King Lear - Power & Authority Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

When people encounter power and authority often times their values and morals begin to deteriorate. In Act 1 of King Lear you see the destruction of the old order which is based on harmony between the personal, familial, social, natural and divine parts of existence. The destruction of the old order is being caused by the “bad” characters (King Lear, Regan, Goneril and Edmund) in the play because they have abandoned the morals and values within it. The destruction of the old order is caused by pride, old age, sibling rivalry and confusion of identity. In Act 1 of King Lear, King Lear himself is very much a victim of his own pride. It is also this pride that aids in the deterioration of the old order. It seems that he trust no one around him, not his loyal servant Kent, or Gloucester, or his (at first) beloved daughter Cordelia, all of whom are the most trustworthy. Instead he puts his trust in his two older daughters whom merely act as “yes men”. This is proven when King Lear offers the biggest dowry to the daughter who claims to love him the most.
