History 4340 The Whig Party The Whigs were a political party that stood for Anti-Jacksonian. The Whigs were opposed to Andrew Jackson, who they called “King Andrew”, and his Democratic Party. The Whigs were formed by a number of groups, the Anti-Masonic Party and namely the National Republican Party. They were “led” by Henry Clay and Daniel Webster. The Whig Party was organized in the early 1830’s and ran candidates in the 1836 presidential election. They were a party of wealth, but not all were wealthy. The Whig Party was totally misunderstood. The Whig Party was established when Southern Democrats and National Republicans opposed Andrew Jackson’s growing strength as president. Jackson was a strong-minded man who believed the president should lead the nation and Congress should follow. Jackson vetoed more congressional laws than any other president, because he simply did not like them. This infuriated many people and ultimately brought about the Whig Party. They took their name from the British Whig / Tories. The British Whigs were for parliamentary control ......
