The Threat of an Avian Influenza Pandemic
The Avian influenza also known as the bird flu spread to its first human victim in the year 1997. The avian flu is a virus strain named H5N1 and is said to be transmitted from birds to humans. This issue was brought about in Hong Kong and to prevent a pandemic, authorities ordered all chickens in farms and markets to be slaughtered. About 1.4 million chickens were killed at that time. Hong Kong response was to prevent what previous occurrences the world had went through, such as in 1918 when the Spanish flu killed 20- 40 million people worldwide. The bird flu poses a great threat on the world, which can result in millions of lives lost if extreme measures are not taken to prevent a future pandemic.
In the Bulletin of the World Health Organization, Sarah Marshall states that in the past century there have been three pandemics involving influenza. The Spanish flu was the worst of them all followed by the Asian flu in 1957 which killed about one million people. In 1968 the Hong Kong......
