In The Great Gatsby, everybody dreams. Even though everyone lies, and time is not exactly on everyone’s side, Gatsby stands out as a great dreamer. In The Great Gatsby, Gatsby is a huge dreamer, no doubt about that, but so is everyone else, and far from going counter to the novel’s reality, all this dreaming constitutes that reality. For Gatsby, dreaming is not an escape from life but a way to apprehend life. At the beginning of the book Nick associates Gatsby’s dreams with a heightened sensitivity to the “promise of life.” Gatsby dreams because he is so alive to life; his dreams come not while sleeping but from some hyper-awakeness. When Gatsby was a boy, he dreams before he sleeps: “The most grotesque and fantastic conceits haunted him in his bed at night. A universe of ineffable gaudiness spun itself out in his brain while the clock tickled on the was-stand and the moon soaked with wet light his tangled clothes upon the floor. Each night he added to the pattern of his fancies until drowsiness closed down upon some vivid scene with an obvious embrace.” (Fitzgerald) Dais......
