ASEAN Regional Trading Bloc The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) was formed as a regional trading bloc in 1967. The first members were Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand. In 1984 ASEAN expanded with the admission of Brunei Darussalam. Vietnam joined in 1995, then Loa PDR and Myanmar joined in 1997, and Cambodia joined ASEAN in 1999 (World News Connection, 2006). The aim of ASEAN (as declared in the signing of the 1967 Bangkok Declaration) was for the economic growth and development, both socially and culturally, of the region (News Agency, Iran, 2000). The formation of ASEAN stressed regionalism and was prompted by colonialism leaving the region. Colonialism leaving the region, left the region to solve political and security problems for themselves. The formation of ASEAN helped to secure regional cooperation to promote trade, investment and security within East Asia (Marks, 2006).
