Context of ‘The Railway Man’ The Railway Man comes very close to being autobiography, as Eric Lomax tells us about his life, courage and strength during the Second World War. He tells how he was tortured by the Japanese on the Burma-Siam Railway and about meeting one of his tormentors 50 years later. The purpose of Lomax writing this novel is to inform us of how life was for people during the Second World War and how it can affect there lives afterwards, in which he succeeds in doing with this touching account of his own personal experience. Lomax came from a higher class, ‘My father was also the regional editor of the Journal of the Institution of Post Office Electrical Engineers’. Prior to World War II there was a big divide in social class. The upper and middle class didn’t associate with the lower class as they considered themselves far more superior. However, this changed during the Second World War as the victims all joined forces to get through the pain and torture that they were subjected to by the Japanese. This is evident in The Railway Man.
