Wal-Mart was one of the first companies to recognize its need to organize an efficient inventory and delivery system. Wal-Mart was a force in technology revolution that eventually spread throughout the retail industry and its use of chain suppliers. Since Wal-Marts initial conception, it was a rural market. Wal-Marts management had difficulty communicating with its stores and getting merchandise delivered to them. So the company experimented with new technologies. In 1970, it was the first to use computers, then later scanners, to track inventory.
Instead of the need to have warehouses to hold large stock inventories, Wal-Mart planned to build a network of computerized distribution centers. As a result, when stores ran out of a particular product, they were delivered directly from the manufacturer on an as-needed basis. This helped cut inventory costs and reduced prices on the shelves.
