NAFTA: A Brief Introduction
On January 1, 1994, history was made when the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) went into effect. NAFTA is a treaty between Mexico, United States and Canada to make the transportation of goods, and services across national boundaries more freely. There were both clear pros and cons of NAFTA before it went into effect. NAFTA promised a lot of benefits but did these benefits outweigh the cons? Many believe that the truth about NAFTA is that, it is a clever deception.
One of the effects of NAFTA was that thousands of American jobs had shifted to Mexico. Many American corporations moved their facilities to Mexico to pay lower wages and not worry so much about environmental regulations. Mexican workers were satisfied with low wages and didnt worry much about other benefits unlike American workers. Mexican farmers also took a hit from NAFTA because many U.S based agricultural companies exported their crops to Mexico to sell their crops in Mexico.......
