Symbolism in a Worn Path Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Phoenix Jackson in “A Worn Path” by Eudora Welty fought against her hardships, her old age, and the poverty that surrounded her. She traveled through a long path, and she had to fight many obstacles in order to accomplish her goal. In the story Eudora Welty uses symbolism to show the hardships and struggles that Phoenix Jackson had to endure in her journey. Her name alone is a symbol. It symbolizes how Phoenix Jackson had to rise from her ashes to pursue her goal. The worn path symbolizes Phoenix’s life and the struggles she endures in her life. Another symbol is the hunter. He was described as a “white man” (112, Welty). The hunter being a white man symbolizes racism, which was another obstacle Phoenix faced in her life. Eudora Welty really uses the setting of her story as a good way to symbolize Phoenix’s struggles and hardships in her journey. Phoenix Jackson is a very interesting character full with hardship and sorrow. The story shows her dedication and how much it meant to her to go into town and get medicine for her grandson.
