Pathmark is a supermarket chain located in the heavily populated areas of New York, New Jersey, Delaware and Pennsylvania. It was founded by Herb Brody, Milton Perlmutter and Alex Aidekman in 1968. The company grew gradually between the 70s and the 80s, building many freestanding drugstores and supermarkets. After accruing a 1.62 billion dollar debt in 1987, Pathmark was bought out by Merrill Lynch Capital Partners and made private. At this time the headquarters was also moved to Carteret, New Jersey, where it still is today. In 1993 Pathmark underwent a $1.4 billion recapitalization, but this did not help with the stores plans to go public. And finally in 1995 they sold 30 of its 36 free-standing drugs stored to RiteAid for 60 million dollars in order to gain capital. (Pathmark Stores, Inc.)
Pathmarks numerous CEO changes caused a lot of reorganizations and closings but led to a better, stronger company. In 1996 Jack Futterman retired and was replaced by James Donald whose first action as CEO was to eliminate 300 jobs at the Pathmark headquarters and close a dozen grocery stor......
