Poetry of World War I
Two great poets of the Twentieth Century were Rupert Brooke and Siegfried Sassoon. In Britain, writers commonly took an interest in writing celebratory pieces of poetry known as Georgian poetry; these poems commonly expressed the glories of war as well as encouraged dying for ones country. Poets of that time begin to change the tide and write of the atrocities of the war conveying to their readers the death and destruction that was truly happening. World War I poetry began to call attention to the appalling effects of the war and snub the prior perception that war was glorious.
Rupert Brooke was an English writer who wrote several pieces of Georgian poetry in celebration of England. Brooke never would discover the horrors of what war was really like as he died in 1915 of dysentery only 8 months after joining the war in 1914. His poem The Soldier was written at the beginning of World War I before the horror of trench warfare was known and became a leading example of Georgian poetry in adoration of war.
