The Risks of Loving and Losing for African American How would it feel if you had to lose the ones you loved and had them taken away? In the novel, Beloved by Toni Morrison, Baby Suggs, Sethe and Denver are characters in the novel had lost a loved one. Many African Americans lost loved ones in the time they were slaves. Some lost them when they were beaten or killed by there slave owners, when they ran away and some even gave up and killed themselves. The risk of loving them was hard because they would not know what would happen to them the next day: if they would be taken away and not seen ever again. So, the risks of loving and losing for African American were very difficult for them. Baby Suggs, a character in the novel Beloved, had children, but she never got to love them. She was a slave, and she knew that if she had loved one of them, it would be difficult for her to just let them go or be taken away from her arms. Any one that Baby Suggs knew who had not run off or been hanged, got rented out, loaned out, brought up, brought back, stored up, mortgaged, won, stole or seized. ......
