The purpose of this paper is to define Total Quality Management (TQM) as well as provide a description of the impact of globalization on quality. This paper will also compare and contrast traditional management with quality focused management styles, and finally discusses the role of TQM within an organization.
The practice of TQM can be considered a style of management, which has a central focus on providing customers with products and services that satisfy their needs. The practices of an organization are set forth in order to consistently deliver upon or exceed the customers requirements. Modern quality management was born in the Bell Telephone Laboratories, through the work of Dr. W. Edwards Deming and Joseph Juran (Burrill, Ledolter, 1999). Japan sought to improve upon its inferior quality through restructuring its firms and economy following World War II in the 1950s.
