Back in London, Mary’s brave escape and the tragedy of her children’s death have raised a public outcry. Women would have respected her and felt for her loss, while men would have most likely wanted to be with a woman who was independent and strong. Also many of them would have had some sort of dealing with the law or just disliked the government’s policy. Another strong possibility was that they wanted to hear an “accurate” account of Australia – then called Botany Bay. People of lower classes, who were stricken with hunger and disease, or had had been in trouble with the law and got of lightly or not been caught would have felt that they needed to support her.Mary had lost her family, the only thing that had ever really mattered to her she felt defeated because the only reason she left Botany Bay was for her children’s survival and now they were both dead.
