Meaning in Documentaries Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Many would describe documentaries as a truthful recollection of events. In reality these events are subject to manipulation and may not be as ‘factual’ as most would believe. The film maker positions the audience to react in the desired manner by employing definite cultural assumptions and acquired discourses through symbolism, interviewing techniques, dramatization and expert opinion. This can be seen particularly well in director and actor, Morgan Spurlock’s film ‘Super Size Me’. ‘Super Size Me’ explores relative health consequences of eating fast food and in particular food from the McDonalds chain of restaurants. The film follows Spurlock as he binge-eats only at food-giant McDonalds over thirty days while limiting his physical activity. Film techniques like Cinema-verite are used to represent McDonalds as a company placing profit over the health and well-being of their customers.
