The Civil Rights Movement's most prominent leaders, Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X, represent two spectrums of the revolt against racism and inequality. One stood for nonviolent resistance and the other stood for revolution "by any means necessary." Both men ultimately became towering icons of contemporary African-American culture and had a great influence on black Americans as well as anyone else who supported the fight for justice and inequality. By the end of their lives, both men make radical changes in their theologies and solutions to the fight for justice and racial equality, which ultimately leads to their assassinations. Malcolm X was born Malcolm Little on May 19, 1925, in Omaha Nebraska. Malcolm's childhood was characterized by the teachings of his father, a Baptist minister, who stressed Black Nationalism and black pride. After his father is murdered and his mother is institutionalized, Malcolm is forced to leave Omaha and grows up in the foster system.
