Every major radio and television broadcast opened with the same account. It was the countdown to July 1st 1997, when china would resume its control over Hong Kong. It was fast becoming a national obsession. The imminent hand over is seen as one of the most glorious events in modern history. This agreement which ended 155 years of British rule has also launched a new era in the trade and diplomacy between the two countries.
The colony became the Hong Kong special administrative region of the people republic of china (HKSAR) after the formal handover ceremony on July the 1st. The ceremony had ended a 13 year transition that had started with the two heads of government in December 1984.The agreement had specified that under Chinese rule the HKSAR would have a high degree of independence, except in matters of foreign relations and defence, and that the social and economic systems as well as the lifestyle in Hong Kong would remain unchanged for 50 years after 1997.
