Nature of the Project Southwest Airlines emerged into the airline industry with new innovative business practices not tried by its competitors. They focused on providing short distance trips on frequent intervals at fares about 50% lower than other airlines. Southwest Airlines created a new market of travelers, and has been successful in their operations ever since. Southwests business concept was to get passengers to their destinations when they wanted to get there, on time, at the lowest possible fares, while making sure customers were having a good time. Southwest Airlines began business in 1971 with service to Houston, Dallas, and San Antonio. Over the years, Southwest has become the fourth largest major airline in the United States, and fly to over 60 cities all over the United States, prominently in the South.
