A Separate Peace Essay In the book A Separate Peace John Knowles indirectly states that jealousy destroys friendship. He implies this through Genes jealousy of Phineas. Gene is jealous because Finny is good at sports and is carefree. Also Finny gets away with everything. Gene is not the only one who is jealous of Finny. Leper is also jealous of him. Leper fells this way because he wants to be as close to Gene as Finny is. Finny is also jealous though. He is jealous of all the students at Devon because they are going to war. He wants to go to war but since he has a bad leg no military branches will take him. The highest amount of jealousy is between Finny and Gene. This tension is caused by Finnys athletic ability, the way he is never worried about anything, and his way of talking his way out of everything. It was hypnotism. I was beginning to see that Phineas could get away with anything. I couldnt help envying him that a little, which was perfectly normal. There was no harm in envying even your best friend a little.
