Enforcement of domestic violence laws remains a major concern. Police often fail
to respond or are hostile towards women who report domestic violence. Domestic
violence usually involves men abusing their female partners and female vise versa.
However, it isnt just hitting, or fighting, or having arguments occasionally. It takes many
forms, including threats, intimidation, isolation, and emotional, and sexual abuse. Its a
chronic abuse of power. Men usually become abusive because they want to have power
and control in the relationship.
The effects of domestic violence can devastate peoples lives. Women are at
higher risk of miscarriages, and are more likely to give birth to low birth weight children.
It can impair a parents ability to nurture the development of their children because they
may become so depressed and preoccupied with the violence. As a result of this, they are
unable to care for their childrens basic needs. Parents who have been traumatized by
