Nectar in a Sieve Specific interesting/significant historical/cultural items learned from book: During this time period women did not have a big part in society. Their job was to have kids and hopefully they be boys and stay at home and cook and clean. Yet Rukmani was one very grateful woman that worked side by side with her husband on the fields and did the same thing as him. Rukmani was married young but she was married to a wonderful man. As I read the book I saw that she could only call her husband by “husband” yet she did not like that rule and for once she called him by his name, “Nathan.” She was pregnant and they were all excited including her mother and father but when she did deliver it was a beautiful baby girl. Everybody was so disappointed including Rukmani because she knew that her daughter would mean nothing to the family. Later they kept trying and it was for sure she could have no more children.
