Handmaid’s Tale – Oral _____________________________________________ The Regean era of the 1980s heralded a political swing to right wing conservative values; as they railed to reinforce the maternal role of women, in which they were expected to uphold traditional beliefs. As a coalition of conservative interests who sought to influence government legislation on family issues and public morals, the New Right harked back to America’s Puritan inheritance, – which gained prominence under the tenure of Reagan and the first President Bush. Against this, Margaret Atwood penned a dystopian novel, The Handmaid’s Tale - commonly lauded as a “feminist 1984” – in which she vehemently reacts to the growing political power of the American religious right, projecting a nightmarish future much to the tune of Orwell’s 1984 and Huxley’s Brave New World. Of particular concern to Atwood was the new-found complacency of the second wave feminism in the political milieu; which consequently led to the loss of the gains and freedoms previously won.
