Although being based in entirely different cultures and time, the two texts, Raise the Red Lantern, a film by Yimou, and A Doll's House, a play by Ibsen, present common issues such as, oppression, struggle for change and deception. Through these issues, the authors use their protagonist in conjunction with various techniques to explore the idea that, sometimes, rules need to be broken.
Oppression of women plays a vital role in both texts in relation to the need to breach the rules. In the two texts, the authors present female protagonists, who are trapped in a society where their own happiness and welfare is neglected. Breaking rules is the only way they can achieve satisfaction.
