Raise the Red Lantern vs A Dolls House Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

“Compare the ways in which the authors of the two texts explore the idea that, sometimes, rules need to be broken.” Although being based in entirely different cultures and time, the two texts, Raise the Red Lantern, a film by Yimou, and A Doll's House, a play by Ibsen, present common issues such as, oppression, struggle for change and deception. Through these issues, the authors use their protagonist in conjunction with various techniques to explore the idea that, sometimes, rules need to be broken. Oppression of women plays a vital role in both texts in relation to the need to breach the rules. In the two texts, the authors present female protagonists, who are trapped in a society where their own happiness and welfare is neglected. Breaking rules is the only way they can achieve satisfaction. Yimou’s character Songlian is a concubine who is sold into a constrictive Chinese courtyard house that has belonged to the Chen family for many generations and Nora, the main character in A Doll’s House, is living a lie, believing she is happy when in fact, she is playing a role.
