Oscar Schindler What is a hero? Is it someone ordinary who does something extraordinary? Some one that risks everything to help others, maybe even someone that we consider an enemy? Each of us has our own definition of a hero. Oscar Schindler is and unlikely hero especially to the Jews. He was born on April 18, 1908, in Zwittau, a small town in Czechoslovakia. His Father, Johann Schindler, and his mother Francisca nee Luser, were both Germans from Silesia, who settled in Svitavy. His father worked in insurance, and sold electrical generators for domestic purposes. In 1915, Elfriede was born. Oscar was very close to his younger sister as well as his mother. During his school years Oscar worked in the family business. Then, after completing his schooling he took a short break. He later started commuting to Brno, where he worked as a representative for Moravska Elektotechnica, an electrical company.
