Firewall: Are you in or are you out? Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The idea of wall to keep out unwanted visitors goes back thousands of years. Large stone castles were built in Europe from about the 1100’s to about the 1500’s. The purpose of these huge buildings were to defend the country from foreign invasion but also to preserve the king’s and the nobles’ power over the land. In order to keep the castle safe it needed a good amount of protection which normally comes in the form of high walls, moats and enormous steel gates. These were built to protect the castle against any enemy attacks. Even the Chinese used a wall in the form of the Great Wall of China to protect them against the Mongols and other tribes. The meaning of the term “firewall” depends largely on the context in which it is being used. It is however a word that has long been in existence as proven by Lightholer (1764). Lightholer made use of the term “firewall” to refer to the walls which separated the parts of a building or structure most likely to have a fire from the rest of the building. A related use was connected with steam trains, as described by Schneier (2000).......
