Ethical relativism holds that morality is relative to the norms of ones culture. That is, whether the action is right or wrong depends on the norms of the society in which it is practiced. (Velasquez, et. al., 2007, para. 4) This translates to state morals are not absolute and according to this theory, morals are relative to the culture and society, and at times, the individual. In the pursuit of what is right and wrong, many components of ethical relativism allow for people to seek their own truth and enlightenment of what is right and wrong. This paper will examine the essential points of ethical relativism, and discusses how the theory intersects with the personal values of the author.
