Works of fiction explore fundamental and universal ideas often magnified under a writer’s pen. The genre of tragedy, as established by Aristotle in Ancient Greece deals with serious human actions, relationships between people and their gods and the meaning of human existence. As fiction reflects an era of time, tragedy as a genre of fiction is therefore a variable to naturally be interpreted. The construed Elizabethan Tragedy has its own nuances of definition with visible Aristotelian roots. One such play that fills this mould is Macbeth by William Shakespeare. Macbeth, the tragic hero, suffers from one flaw that leads to his eventual demise. The notion of this ‘tragic flaw’ had been demonstrated also in Ancient Greece with titles like the Oedipus Plays by Sophocles; the two title characters, Macbeth and Oedipus similarly set the extent of tragedy their plays unfold to. This humanization of the protagonist in tragedy is what the genre flourishes around, as the audience is given the tools to challenge and further accept characters and plot elements.
