The Don Taylor play, “The Roses of Eyam”, recounts the events of the Bubonic Plague which devastated the Derbyshire village of Eyam between 1665 and 1666. Although it is based on fact, it is not entirely reliable due to the way in which Taylor manipulates the actual events to suit his own artistic purposes. Taylor aims to produce a dramatic and moving play, demonstrating the way in which the bubonic plague may have affected the villagers of Eyam. Taylor’s passion for the story of Eyam developed after reading “Fifty World Famous Heroic Deeds” in which the people of Eyam were commended for their brave, selfless attitudes, and the sacrifices they made when they resolved to close off their village with the plague trapped inside. The play begins with the arrival of the new rector, William Mompesson. Mompesson arrives in Eyam to replace the former rector, and devout Puritan, Thomas Stanley, who had been dismissed after refusing to use the Book of Common Prayer introduced by Charles II in 1660.
