Gains in Cognitive Aging Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Are there any gains when it comes to cognitive aging? If so, how are they conceptualised and how does this concept of “gains” apply to development throughout later life? This idea of “gains” in cognitive aging is one that is being used more and more frequently in the study of psychological aspects of human development. To do this, developmental gains must be distinguished from developmental “losses”. The actual meaning of “gains” in this context and its relationship with losses has not been fully examined. In this essay, I will focus on the concept of gains as it applies to development throughout life, particularly in late life. To begin to understand this concept, we must first try to gather an explanation as to what a “gain” is. A simple definition would say a gain constitutes an improvement, progress, or the advance towards a valued goal. A loss then would be defined as a failure to win or acquire, or a failure to maintain what one has.
