The Don Taylor play, The Roses of Eyam, recounts the events of the Bubonic Plague which devastated the Derbyshire village of Eyam between 1665 and 1666. Although it is based on fact, it is not entirely reliable due to the way in which Taylor manipulates the actual events to suit his own artistic purposes. Taylor aims to produce a dramatic and moving play, demonstrating the way in which the bubonic plague may have affected the villagers of Eyam. Taylors passion for the story of Eyam developed after reading Fifty World Famous Heroic Deeds in which the people of Eyam were commended for their brave, selfless attitudes, and the sacrifices they made when they resolved to close off their village with the plague trapped inside.
