GEOG 111 The Navajo Indian Tribe The Navajo Indian tribe is the largest in North America. A long time ago the ancestors lived in Northwestern Canada and Alaska. Over 1,000 years ago they began to travel south and reached the southwestern United States. They met the Pueblo Indians, who where farmers and began to settle near them. The Navajo learned how to plant corn, beans, squash, and melons from the Pueblos. The Navajo reservation is currently the largest in the United States with over 140,000 people. The Navajo Nation extends into the United States of Utah, Arizona and New Mexico, covering over 27,000 square miles (History, par. 1). The Navajo currently live in a cool desert climate. This is a dry climate. The precipitation total in this area is less than eight inches. The demand of precipitation for this region is over sixty inches. Thus, the demand greatly exceeds the supply.
