Introduction
The Human Resources Department has been struggling to understand current budget discussions and how cost affects the budget. Cost can be defined as an amount paid or required in payment for a purchase. The purpose of this paper is to identify various terms used to describe cost. I will specifically address fixed, variable, indirect, direct and sunk costs, providing examples of each.
Fixed Cost
Fixed costs are the costs that all companies must pay regardless of sales or production levels. Building payments, depreciation and taxes are just a few of the fixed costs that are common to all companies. It is easy to see why the term fixed cost is used. The costs are unmovable and must be paid each month or year without exception. A good example is a lease payment. If you are leasing a building at $2,000 per month, then you will pay that amount each month, no matter how well or how poorly the business is doing.
Variable Cost
Opposite of fixed costs are variable costs. A variable cost is a cost that changes in proportion to a change in a company's activity ......
