Jamestown Island Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
Typhoid, contaminated water, idleness, and mortality were all found in the early settlement on Jamestown Island. Walking to the site past a swampy area, it was easy to see how quickly diseases could spread. The stagnant pools of water would have been ideal growing pools for bacteria and other contaminants which contributed to disease--giving the false impressions of laziness. After high death rates, the settlers dispersed from the confined and disease-breeding area of Jamestown. The movement to new settlements proved successful with the decrease of the death rate-which they interpreted as becoming seasoned to the summer epidemics. Moving back to their foothold in the new worldthe symbol of the British claimsthey returned to Jamestownand the brackish water along with disease. Why did they return when they knew their chances of survival were greatly decreased by inhabiting that area?
