Introduction
A highlight for any company is the issuance of publicly traded stock. While the reasons for an initial public offering (IPO) are straightforward, the device for doing so is complex. An IPO is offering stock to the public on an open market for the first time. Consequently, the alternate term for this process is "going public." The first recorded IPO was in July 1791 when equity in the Bank of the United States was first offered for sale. In this paper Learning Team C will summarize the process companies go through in order to go to market in an initial public offering. This will include the registration process, cost of issuance, the impact of ownership control, and the source and application of funds.
