In The Yellow Wallpaper an unnamed female narrator, her husband, Mary and the narrators baby move into a colonial mansion as a means toward the narrators healing. Her husband, a physician, decided that this would be the best move for her healing. The words she uses and the tone presented in the story make it sound as though she is simply depressed and needs some attention from her loved ones and be around her baby. John, her husband, will not allow her to exercise outside or even keep a journal. She is only to eat and sleep. Being confined in her room all day is slowly driving her into madness. Anybody put into solitary confinement will go crazy to some extent, and this woman is hallucinating and comes to believe she has emerged from the wallpaper and is one of the women she sees.
