Families are a vital part of society, forming the basic unit of home life for most Australian people. Family composition and structure is however, continually evolving. Over the last few generations the composition of families and the roles and responsibilities of parents have changed substantially. Despite these transformations, the family unit still remains the foundation of society and the place in which children are nurtured as they grow to maturity.
Families portrayed on television in sitcoms and dramas have provided a historical record of particular gender roles, familial issues, values and beliefs. Obviously fictional, the families give examples of real-life family interactions and may be used as an indicator of changing societal attitudes about many issues that arise within the family. This was a narrow view of a model family, yet it pervaded the media and was widely accepted as the ideal and most normal.
