Arthur Miller’s ‘The Crucible’ is set in the Puritan Salem in 1692, and depicts the Salem Witch Trials, in which around twenty four accused witches were killed or died in prison. Puritan life is vital to the story, and portrays a simple and God loving society. In Act 1 we are introduced to Proctor’s character. He is a passionate, intimidating, good looking man, as shown by the stage directions of Mercy when he enters. “Mercy: (both afraid of him and strangely titillated).” This idea is extended by Abigail when she describes him as a “stallion”. This suggests that this is how Proctor acted with her. When he is alone with Abigail this idea is reinforced and it is made evident how she feels about him. This feeling is mutual, but is denied by him because of his love for his wife. “Abigail: Oh, I marvel how such a strong man may let such a sickly wife-. Proctor: (angered – at himself as well) you will speak nothing of Elizabeth.” Although he committed adultery it is clear he still feels the need to defend his wife.
