During the 17th Century, Europeans began colonizing the newly discovered Americas in search of a new and better life. They sought out for religious freedom, escape from tyrannical governments, freedom from debt, and a brand new start to fulfill whatever goals they wish. Though people left for many of the same reasons, once they arrived in their colony, they found each one to be rather different from each other. Each colony had its own set of rules and beliefs in order to build their image of a New World “Jerusalem”, many of which would evolve into foundation of our country and shape the was our world is viewed and how the American people are characterized.
The colony of Massachusetts was settled in by pilgrims, arriving in the Mayflower in 1620, who were seeking religious freedom from William and Mary in England. The colonists settled in Plymouth and were later followed by the Puritans who established the Massachusetts Bay Colony.
