The National Science Education Standards (NSES) are set by the National Academies of Science (NAS) and also by Project 2061. Project 2061 comes from the American Association of the Advancement of Science (AAAS). AAAS has set its mission to advance science, engineering, and innovation throughout the world for the benefit of all people, (retrieved on September 21, 2007 from http://www.aaas.org/aboutaaas/). AAAS consists of four major programs that set goals to obtain this mission. Those programs include: Science and Policy, International Activities, Education and Human Resource and lastly, Project 2061. Project 2061 is a program that has set out to assist Americans in becoming literate in science, mathematics and technology. NAS, on the other hand is composed of three other groups; the National Academy of Engineering, the Institute of Medicine, and the National Academies.
