The Company of Wolves by Angela Carter is a retelling of famous fairytale The Little Red Riding Hood. The short story takes a modern perspective that challenges the gender roles that have been set by society. These social constructs are challenged in the story, laying emphasis on the strength of women over men.
The story begins with the description of wolves, which are used to illustrate the mens overpowering and sexually aggressive behaviour towards women. The wolves are defined as carnivore incarnates that have great desire for nothing less than flesh. They are as fierce as they are deceitful, and are feared especially by women whom they prefer to take as victims. Young ladies are warned by older women to run for their lives at the sight of a wolf for they will certainly be eaten by them. This relationship existing between the wolves and the village women is a reflection of our societys traditional perspective on the gender roles of men and women.
