Scillepi ENC 1102 09/22/07 In the case of Eudora Welty’s “Why I live at the P.O.,” the quote “Never judge a book by its cover,” should be “Never judge a short story by its cover.” If this story is not taken under careful consideration, then the whole point of it can be regrettably lost. The reader is led by hand throughout by the main character, Sister, who seemingly is the reluctant recipient of all the drama and conflict, but coincidently is the source of it all. Welty gives hints throughout the story showing the reader to be wary of Sisters tales, and to look beyond the face value of this story. The petty feud that Sister has with her family in “Why I live at the P.O.” is best represented by the Man vs. Man type of conflict. Throughout the story Sister is clashing with her family members, one by one, until all of them seem to be on her younger sister, Stella-Rondo’s, “side.” But the true conflict lay within Sister, it was the envy of her younger sister that drove Sister into a conflict with the rest of her family.
