Dulce Et Decorum est
Dulce Et Decorum est is a poem written during World War I in which Wilfred Owen tries to persuade his reader that it is not Good and Glorious do die for ones country. Based on his own experience, Owen describes a gas attack he witnessed as a group of soldiers leave front line trenches. Unfortunately, one soldier cannot fit his mask on time and Owen creates an image of the horrors of his death.
Using various literary techniques Owen justifies his attitude towards war and forces the reader to confront his or her own views.
In stanza one Owen introduces his readers to the life that the soldiers lived by saying
bent double, live old beggars under sacks
Here Owen compares the soldiers to old beggars suggesting they must have been in very bad conditions to look like beggars. This simile makes you think of how they must have looked - their clothes must have been torn and muddy, the men must have been weak and smelly, dirty and ill looking.
