Symbolism in The Awakening Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Symbolism is the use of objects, characters, figures, or colors to express abstract ideas or concepts and is perhaps the most important literary device used in Kate Chopin’s The Awakening. The novel explores Edna Pontellier’s desire to find and live fully within her true self. Her devotion to that purpose causes resistance with her friends and family; hence she falls in love with Robert Lebrun and practically abandons her role as a wife and a mother. Besides Edna’s questionable friend Mademoiselle Reisz, Edna is forced to make this transformation nearly alone. Throughout the novel, the symbols become increasingly apparent to the reader, and there are three very evident examples. Birds, clothes, and the sea are three symbols used in The Awakening to underline subtle points. In the beginning of the novel, when Edna is introduced, she is fully clothed. Over the course of the story her clothes are slowly removed. Clothes are a symbol related to the rules and conventions of society.
