The Human Genome The nucleus of each human cell contains chromosomes. Chromosomes are threadlike structure that contains deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). DNA is a complex molecule that contains genetic information. Genes, units of hereditary information, are short pieces of DNA. Rather than being an independent source of development information, DNA works with other sources of information to specify our characteristics. Each gene has its own function, location and designated place on a certain chromosome. The human genome is the entire system of genes and chromosomes that create Homo sapiens. Humans only have approximately 20,000 to 25,000 genes in the human body. All cells in your body have 46 chromosomes arranged in 23 pairs. The reason the chromosomes are in pairs is because you inherit one from your father and one from your mother to create each chromosome. Through reproduction, fertilization occurs to begin the process of contributing the offspring itÂ’s genetic material.
