WHY WE HAD TO DROP THE ATOMIC BOMB THE BIGGEST DECISION On August 6 and 9, 1945, Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan were destroyed by the first atomic bombs used in warfare. The atomic bombs that were dropped killed as many as 300,000 people and changed the international balance of power. The decision to drop the bombs were made over fifty years ago, but the debate still continues. Was the U.S. justified in using the atomic bomb against Japan? World War II sets the backdrop to this historical event. From 1937 to 1945 Japan was at constant war. They slaughtered tens of thousands of Chinese in Nanking, shocking the world. Japanese troops brutally mistreated innocent civilians, forced laborers and prisoners of war, and conducted biological experiments on human victims, much like that of the Nazi regime.
