Sembene Ousmanes short film Borom Sarret (1963) was the first work of one of the most influential figures in African cinema. Ousmanes film is a luminous window into the milieu of urbanization, modernization, and colonial influence in Senegals capital city, Dakar. The documentation of a day in the life of an unnamed cart driver?or borom sarret?is a brilliant means of conveying the tensions and difficulties that arose from these forces in colonial Dakar. Among the sources of friction that Ousmane explores are two that bring significant hardship to the borom sarret throughout the film. One is the pronounced social stratification that occurs in the city. The other is a clear incongruence between the values associated with kinship and community bonds and the values that are forged by the capitalism and modernism of Dakars urbanized, colonial environment.
