In the novel Rain and I, Dorris Heffron expands the idea of love through Apple, the narrator and main character. Apples notion and understanding of love is revealed as she matures throughout the novel.
According to the myths, love was the greatest transformer of things.(Heffron 107) There were many myths about love. Apple had only dreamed and heard about love, how magnificent it must be and feel, but she had never experienced any of it- after all, she was only a young girl. Nevertheless, Apple and her family do share love, but the kind of love Apple yearned for was much more profound and intimate relationship. Before she matured, she yearned for a relationship that would transform her reality and herself as well.
When Apple met Thor, a grade 12 student with a muscular bum (Heffron 106), she instantly flipped for him. Her instincts figured it was love, real love.
