Art gallery curators are often confused with art critics; however, their defining roles create a clear separation between the two. Curators and critics share the common tie in that they serve as bridges between artists and the public - but where a critic provides their opinion on an artwork or exhibition based on their impressions and understanding, a curator is responsible for establishing a theme for the exhibition. Their role is to take on the demanding task of selecting the appropriate works to be put on display, so that members of the art world and members of the public can create their own opinions about the artist’s work. The curator has the weighty duty to present art to the public; their choices not only determine what we see in a gallery, but what we don’t see.
