Roman art As a primary source, the visual arts offer us much evidence as to what life was like in Ancient Rome. Roman art included many forms and styles and was greatly influenced by Greek styles for a long period of time. Visual arts came in the form of individual portraiture, mosaics, furniture, and jewellery among others. The Romans were prolific art collectors. But it was the idealism of Greek art that again and again captivated the Romans. Greek statues in great abundance stood in Roman forums, in both private and public buildings; villas and baths were museums of Greek sculpture.1st The artists who created the majority of the surviving portraits were Greek, however they were working under the patronage of the wealthy Romans. Their work is a response to Roman needs and a reflection of Roman tastes. The Romans and the Greeks together produced work of great detail, and much historical importance.
