Through out “The Enormous Radio” by John Cheever, and “Everything that rises must converge” by Flannery O’Connor, there are many examples of illusion versus reality. It doesn’t take much to get caught up in one’s own world; just a little bit of ignorance can do the trick. In these two stories both women think they are living in a completely different world, until they see the reality. Some times it is alright to think parts of life are going great, it can make one feel much better about one’s self, but not one’s entire life! Although a major theme in both short stories is illusions vs. Reality, they are both 2 different types of illusion. In “Everything That Rises Must Converge” the mother is stuck in her past. There are many sentences such as “Since this had been a fashionable neighborhood forty years ago, his mother persisted in thinking they did well to have an apartment in it.”(p.1282) Lines like this one are showing how the mother keeps thinking she is living in the past.
